Sharifa received a B.A. in Theatre with a concentration in performance from Winthrop and now is a Directing Apprentice with the Actors Theatre of Louisville in Kentucky.
“What Winthrop did for me was nurture a career in stage directing that no other college in the South could provide. The amount of opportunities to direct rival B.F.A. programs and have allowed me to be a competitive applicant as I seek continued experience in directing. In addition, the faculty saw where my interest in theatre lied, and understood that it was outside of the curriculum. Instead of letting that interest fade, they went out of their way to nurture them through independent studies. It’s because of that one-on-one attention that I was able to find the kind of theatre I’m so impassioned by and want to spend my career building. I cannot express how rare that is, and how truly grateful I am to program for helping me in that way.
The biggest piece of advice I could give students looking to attend Winthrop for the arts is to take advantage of the amount of opportunities the university allows you to create for yourself. The [college] provides resources that I haven’t found at other institutions and allow you to make the most out of your education. The department was so supportive of me seeking directing opportunities outside of the of the regular season and would go out of their way to help me. The resources Winthrop provides are rare and truly impactful in allowing their students to grow – you just have to take advantage of them!”
